Brian Wright None of the Crayon Rubbings albums fit neatly into a category, which is one of the reasons I really enjoy them. I think this EP is particularly exploring beyond a "safe" sound - a strange mix of rock and jazz - sometimes gorgeous, sometimes frenetic piano and the warbling growl of Laurel Garber truly make a couple of these tracks hard to ignore. Favorite track: Too Obvious.

Too Obvious 03:47
The figure moves in long red cloak Clutching the collar, must stay warm Background green like Army fatigue Fatigue, it is tired Couples waltzing in the cotillion Black figure, green coiffure dance Fall exhausted on the green floor Like Army fatigue, fatigue, they are tired Fatigue in red coat, nears cotillion Still clutching collar, the windows are sweating Condensation Closer to the cotillion, figure sees green Like Army fatigue, fatigued it falls to the ground Dancers arise, the floor is green, look outside Red figure lying fatigued, turn to green above the floor Levitating, too obvious Nothing is so simple, nothing is so simple, nothing is so simple Levitating Nothing is so simple, too obvious Nothing is so simple, too obvious Dancers arise, the floor is green, look outside Red figure lying fatigued, turning to green above the floor Levitating, levitating, levitating Nothing is so simple

Sad Lady 02:30
Sad lady, give him a love song Though you cannot love him like you did before Is it a debt you owe? He saved you from being alone Gray lady, wasted your color On a worldless man you loved long ago The hexed god loved you Watch water attract to the flame Time and again you will see loves mad face The satyr is gone and a god takes his place Writhing in bed, you will see hell worn eyes Speaking of love, how the grim monarchs lie He left in late autumn, frosted wind froze you soul Left with a child that would never grow whole Sad lady, time gave another And he loved you with passion unceasing He cared for you then Tending the torn heart of winter Sad lady, give him a love song Time may subdue your frustrated rage Will you still love him when feeling the onset of age? And do you love him? Does it really matter?

Artist 02:02
You walk the streets like a drunken artist Not quite ready to cut off an ear Van Gogh haunts you, Bartok reminds you Artist’s lives are painful years You went through college an adolescent Not quite ready for an adult world Took a job at a make up counter and bought some needles to scratch your face What are you? A social failure Your neurosis didn’t match theirs Walking the streets, you hear tires old women talking nonsense of young affairs You are unsure of suicide Afraid to hold a gun You pull the trigger, half out of fear that someone else will, before your time is done You feed on the world’s indigestion. They let you dine on their rotted cake It will pass, you’ll soon out grow it. If you’re insane it’s their mistake

Midwest 03:18
Red-eyed poet You were made to die young Wild-haired monger You were made to die young The Midwest winter comes to kill Sunday dinner family will Lethal madness, sure success Midwest winter do your best Screaming wild man You were made to die young Soft-throat crooner You were made to die young The Midwest mothers package you Riddle your youth Extract you Wind fire tempest Wild tale spinner All life ends at a family dinner Loss of vigor Black lost orb One must fight or be absorbed Spark-eyed savior You were made to die young Oh, youthful rebel You were made to die young The Midwest father speaks still air Meet the family Be prepared Meet the aged ones Beat the score Be prepared to be absorbed Family kitchen, family room Family history, family tomb Family outing, family day Family squabble, family play Those who bend will meet the will Fire-tongued rat lives will be killed Red-eyed poet You were made to die young Wild haired monger You were made to die young The Midwest winter come to kill Sunday dinner Family will Lethal madness, sure success Midwest winter Do your best You were made to die young You were made To die young

about

Crayon Rubbings Champaign, Illinois

Crayon Rubbings formed in the early 80s, mixing influences across multiple genres, and featuring unapologetically demanding song forms, lyrics, and delivery from singer-songwriter Laurel Garber. While sometimes compared to Kate Bush at the time, Crayon Rubbings worked together as an ensemble, embracing an edgy live sound with collaborative studio experimentation. ... more
